Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has “no plans to resign” after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) asked him to quit his post or face impeachment inquiries by House Republicans.
Earlier this week, McCarthy said Mayorkas must be removed from his job as the head of the DHS. If he doesn't resign, McCarthy said he would head an impeachment probe that would include hearings by an investigative committee at the border between Mexico and the United States as well as an investigation into Mayorkas himself.
“I am calling on the Secretary to resign,” McCarthy declared. “He cannot and must not remain in that position.”
McCarthy continued, “If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action, and every failure will determine whether we can begin [an] impeachment inquiry.”
In reply, DHS spokeswoman Marsha Espinosa stated to CBS News that Mayorkas has “no plans to resign” and praised his leadership, even in the midst of the biggest wave of illegal immigration along the southern border in American history.
“Secretary Mayorkas is proud to advance the noble mission of this Department, support its extraordinary workforce, and serve the American people,” Espinosa declared. “The Department will continue our work to enforce our laws and secure our border, while building a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system. Members of Congress can do better than point the finger at someone else; they should come to the table and work on solutions for our broken system and outdated laws, which have not been overhauled in over 40 years.”
Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX), speaking at McCarthy's press conference, described the ways in which President Joe Biden's DHS, with Mayorkas in charge, has opened an unnoticed parole program that has vastly increased its Catch and Release operation.
“Millions of unvetted illegal aliens…have been apprehended and blindly released into the country,” Babin said. “They’ve [been] flown, housed, fed, educated, medicated, and incarcerated all on the taxpayer’s dime.”
In fact, since Biden became president in January 2021, the DHS has released about 1.4 million border crossers and illegal aliens into American communities. This number is greater than the populations of eight states and is in addition to the approximately 600,000 illegal immigrants that have successfully traversed the southern border since Biden was elected to office.
The new arrivals who are of working age receive work permits from the DHS to fill American jobs while waiting for their immigration hearings.
