Allen March, Disney’s production coordinator, who works on Disney-Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, spoke at a Disney internal meeting focusing on the organization's “Reimagine Tomorrow” initiative dedicated to the promotion of “underrepresented voices.” Video footage of the live meeting was uncovered by journalist Christopher Rufo, who uploaded it to social media.
March announced that Moon Girl‘s team has been “really open to exploring queer stories,” noting that he would like to focus on queer and transgender characters in order to provide an authentic, modern New York setting for the show that airs on the Disney Channel. “Especially with trans characters. You can't see if someone is trans. There's not one way to look trans. And so kind of the only way to have these canonical trans, canonical asexual characters, canonical bisexual characters is to give them stories where they can be their whole selves.”
In the course of the meeting, March admitted that the media influences children's perceptions of “what is normal.” Children can be “getting all this information from the media. There's a lot of power to that.”
The leaked videos were released during a time when Walt Disney Co. is confronting a flurry of criticism for the company's pledge to oppose Florida's Parental Rights in Education legislation, which Governor Ron DeSantis (R) recently approved into law. The law prohibits the teaching of gender and sexual orientation ideologies to children from kindergarten to third grade. Disney has apparently promised to assist in the fight against law enforcement in the courts as well as within the Legislature, stating that the company's goal is to have the law thrown out. DeSantis has attacked Disney’s management, saying that the company won't achieve its goal of imposing “California values” to overturn an act that's “supported by a strong majority” of the people living in Florida.
