Members of the far-left Democrats are growing increasingly hostile to members of their party who don’t support their agenda. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement after left-wing groups and members of Congress campaigned for him. Moderates in the Senate continue facing pressure from within their own party.
Breyer, an aging judge, had stated in the past that he didn’t plan to remain on the high court for his entire life. However, he had not specified a retirement plan. He will be leaving the bench after the court’s term ends this year, which is months before the midterm election. This would allow President Biden to nominate a younger successor while Democrats control the Senate and can confirm them.
Breyer’s timeline is in line with the goals of those who have been vocal about wanting to ensure that Biden picks Breyer as his successor. Breyer’s decision not to resign was made entirely by the White House.
“There’s no doubt that Justice Breyer, whom I have great respect for, should retire at end of this term,” Rep. Mondaire, D-N.Y. said last spring, just a few months after Biden was elected. “My goodness, haven’t we learned our lesson?”
This lesson was learned from the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who was then replaced by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, then-President Trump’s nominee. Democrats were angry that Ginsburg, who died from cancer at 87, didn’t retire while Barack Obama was president. This would have allowed Democrats the opportunity to elect her replacement.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), said Jones “has a point” last year when she was asked about Breyer’s retirement. Ocasio Cortez was asked specifically if Breyer should be removed.
13 progressive activist groups joined the chorus last June and ran an ad asking Breyer to quit his job.
The ad, which was paid for by Black Lives Matter and Women’s March, stated that Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer should announce his intention to retire immediately.
The ad stated that Breyer would be replaced by an ultra-conservative justice. A further-right Supreme Court would put our democracy and rights of marginalized people at greater risk. “For the benefit of the country, now’s the time to stand down.”
Breyer’s lobbying to retire was much more civilized than what an ex-aide to Obama said earlier in the month.
After Senator Kyrsten Sinema spoke on the Senate Floor, Alyssa Mastromonaco railed about her on “Pod Save America” podcast. She refused to join other Democrats in removing the filibuster to a vote rights bill.
“She gave the speech while Joe Biden was [his] way up the Hill. Mastromonaco stated that it was the most disrespectful, grossest and s—tiest thing she could have done. “I believe she’s a —. This is what I have to add.”
Mastromonaco continued to add that Sinema was not a maverick, like late Arizona Senator John McCain, but rather “trash.”
Mastromonaco wasn’t the only one to criticize Sinema, Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.
Protesters blocked Manchin’s houseboat as he resisted Biden’s social-spending bill, which at the time had a cost of $3.5 trillion. Sinema was recorded by leftists and accosted in the bathroom. One person confronted Sinema on an airplane flight and another did the same at the airport asking about her opposition to spending legislation.
When asked about the intimidation tactics in October, President Biden condemned them but seemed to downplay their importance.
Biden stated that although they don’t believe these tactics are appropriate, it does happen to everyone. It doesn’t happen to people without Secret Service support. It’s all part of the process.
