Based on letters examined by CBS News, Grassley, the majority chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, wrote about FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland claiming that officials within the FBI provided evidence of efforts to discredit or denigrate information about Hunter Biden.
“The information I received from my office has raised concerns regarding the FBI's reception and use of negative information regarding Hunter Biden, and the FBI's deceitful portrayal of the evidence as misinformation. The consistency and volume of these claims prove their credibility, and warrant the issuance of this document,” wrote Grassley.
“First, it's been alleged that the FBI developed information in 2020 about Hunter Biden's criminal financial and related activity,” he added. “It is also believed that in August of 2020, FBI Supervisory Intelligence Analyst Brian Auten opened an assessment that was utilized by the FBI headquarters team to improperly discredit negative Hunter Biden information as disinformation and caused investigative activity to cease.”
The letter also claimed that just one month prior to elections in 2020 “an avenue of derogatory Hunter Biden reporting was ordered closed” by a top FBI agent in the FBI's Washington Field office.
“The allegations provided to my office appear to indicate that there was a scheme in place among certain FBI officials to undermine derogatory information connected to Hunter Biden by falsely suggesting it was disinformation,” wrote Grassley.
CBS News noted that “more than 150 financial transactions involving either Hunter or James Biden's global business affairs were flagged as concerning by U.S. banks for further review.”
Delaware U.S. attorney David Weiss and his office, which has been looking into financial fraud, tax fraud, and the smuggling of foreign influence, declined to discuss how his department was informed of FBI allegations of labeling Hunter Biden disinformation or if it had influenced the investigation.
In a prior letter, dated May 31st, Grassley accused Timothy Thibault, the chief FBI agent of the bureau's Washington Field Office, of possible violations of “[f]ederal laws, regulations and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) guidelines.”
“Whistleblowers have reported to me that although the FBI and Justice Department maintain policies dictating specific standards requiring substantial factual predication to initiate an investigation, Thibault and other Justice Department and FBI employees failed to comply with these requirements,” wrote Grassley.
“In light of these allegations, I remain very concerned that political bias by a select group of Justice Department and FBI officials has infected the Justice Department's and FBI's usual process and procedure to open and pursue high-profile and politically charged investigations,” Grassley continued.
Grassley ended by asking for records from the FBI and Justice Department by August 8, while asserting his contention that Garland as well as Wray “have systemic and existential problems within” their respective departments.
Along with requesting records from the FBI as well as in the Justice Department by Aug. 8. Grassley was unhappy with the manner in which the department and bureau are run.
“You have an obligation to the country to take these allegations seriously and immediately investigate,” he said.
