Democratic members of the Illinois legislature are pushing for an “assault weapons” ban, an age limit of 21 years to purchase firearms, and an end to ammunition magazines with more than 10 rounds.
Democrats are the majority party in the Illinois General Assembly and seek to use this majority to swiftly limit the use of Second Amendment rights to bear arms.
WBEZ reported that State Representative Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield) stated, “Gun violence is a daily occurrence. It really can’t wait, and I think that our caucus is going to step up and act with the urgency that this demands.”
Morgan was in attendance at the July 4, 2022, Highland Park parade where a gunman fired at the parade participants, despite the fact that Highland Park has had an “assault weapons” ban since 2013.
At least 28 people were killed in Chicago over the Thanksgiving weekend alone. The shootings occurred in spite of the fact that Cook County has an “assault weapons” ban. This is not the first time that such events have occurred.
California has banned “assault weapons” since the 1990s. It is also ranked the top state for gun-control law effectiveness by the Mike Bloomberg-affiliated Everytown for Gun Safety. It is interesting to note that California is also ranked number one by the FBI on the basis of “active shooter incidents.”
The gun-control proposal being advocated by Illinois Democrats will also extend the period during which guns are required to be surrendered when a surrender order is issued in accordance with the red flag law of the state.
