The Justice Department conducted a search of Biden's Wilmington residence on Friday and discovered more documents bearing classified marks, according to Biden's personal lawyer on Saturday.
The most recent trove contains six documents. The contents of the classified documents are not known.
The White House had previously claimed, on January 14, that the hunt for classified documents was complete.
The collection is in addition to approximately 25 classified documents discovered by Biden's personal attorneys over the recent weeks between the Penn Biden Center and Biden's home.
Some critics have asked why Biden's personal attorneys began looking for the illegally stored documents. It is still unclear and the White House has failed to give the primary reason or motive behind the investigation.
Biden's personal lawyer, Bob Bauer, claimed on Saturday that Biden offered to allow the Justice Department to conduct the investigation.
The search started “at approximately 9:45 AM and concluded at around 10:30 PM and covered all working, living and storage spaces in the home,” Bauer said in a statement, noting that “representatives of both the personal legal team and the White House Counsel's Office were present” in the course of the investigation.
The White House Counsel's Office, which is distinct from Biden's personal lawyers, has issued a statement saying “[n]either Biden nor the First Lady was present in the course of the investigation. The President's lawyers as well as the White House Counsel's Office will continue to work in conjunction with the DOJ along with the Special Counsel.”
The probe is reported to have been widened following Biden's personal attorneys and the DOJ deciding to keep this scandal from the American public.
According to The Washington Post, not only did the White House and DOJ try to keep the scandal out of the public eye and hide the truth, they did not divulge that the second pile of classified documents had already been discovered at the home of Biden at the time that CBS News first contacted the White House about the initial disclosure of classified documents that were not legally stored at the Biden Penn Center.
White House officials are said to be concerned about how Biden's classified documents scandal came to light in the media when only a few select White House officials and Justice Department officials knew about the alleged violation.
