The figures of the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) indicate that over 300 police officers were shot in 2022 and 62 officers were killed in shootings.
The New York Post reported FOP figures that show 331 officers were shot in total.
The 62 who were killed represents an increase of 32 percent over those officers killed in the year 2020.
From the FOP, a lot of officers were shot during “ambush-style” attacks. There were 89 distinct “ambush-style” attacks, and there were 126 officers who were shot during the attacks.
Three-quarters of the total officer fatalities resulted from “ambush-style” attacks.
Breitbart News reported that Riverside County Sheriff's deputy Darnell Calhoun was killed and shot in the course of responding to a phone call late on Friday afternoon.
CBS News noted it was at around 4:20 p.m. at the time Calhoun “responded to the 18000 block of Hilldale Lane in the unincorporated area of Lakeland Village regarding unknown trouble.”
As Calhoun was getting closer to the home in question, the suspect opened fire at Calhoun, who was shot in the back. The attack was fatal. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco issued a press release about Calhoun's passing, which reads that, among other things: “The Department is saddened to announce the passing of deputy Darnell Calhoun who was recently assigned to the Lake Elsinore Station. Deputy Calhoun was killed and wounded during the course of his duties on the 13th of January 2023. He was thirty years old.”
