The world-renowned automobile-racing and operating company NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), with its headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida, celebrated the start of LGBTQ “Pride Month” with a special type of pride flag bearing a message of apology for actions that were not compatible with its purpose. “As we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, we acknowledge that recent actions have not aligned with NASCAR's mission to be a welcoming sport for all,” the organization stated. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to create a more inclusive environment—in our workplaces, at the race track and in the stands,”
On Sunday, Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott waved the green flag prior to the All-Star Race at Texas Motor Speedway. An Associated Press (AP) reporter confirmed that Abbott's presence during the race had been seen as a mistake, even though Abbott's name is not listed in NASCAR’s tweet. In February, Abbott demanded that state departments look into any instances of children being treated to alter their sexual development. This was shortly after Attorney General Ken Paxton defined such treatment as child abuse. Transgender advocates recommend the use of drugs for children that delay the development of puberty as required to provide “gender-affirming” medical care—or treatment that promotes the notion that one can decide on his or her sexual preference, change his or her body's make-up, and undergo surgical procedures that alter the body.
In reaction to NASCAR's tweet, people took to social media to mock the company's arrogance:
“Perfect example of wokeness invading a business to the point where they have completely lost touch with their customer base,” communications analyst Caleb Hull wrote.
“This is just getting silly,” announced conservative journalist and commentator Chad Greene.
“Laughingly pathetic,” wrote the conservative radio host Steve Deace.
“People on here triggered that a politician was allowed to be at a race in a red state and wave the green flag need [to] grow up,” contended Curtis Houck of the Media Research Center (MRC). “People who don't vote as you do shouldn't be forced into either caving or be[ing] silenced.”
“Woke NASCAR? WTH?! What's next? What's next, woke MMA?” proclaimed conservative attorney Harmeet Dhillon.
“Go wake up, and break your back. People like you will never be able to learn,” one Twitter user wrote.
The car-racing organization is increasingly accused of trying to broaden its reach by implementing woke left-wing policies, despite its fans being predominantly conservatives from the red states. However, NASCAR wasn't the only organization to attempt to reach out to those in the LGBTQ+ community at the beginning of “Pride Month.” The U.S. Marine Corps went fully woke when it posted the image of a Marine helmet with rainbow bullets. In addition, the United States Air Force tweeted an image that read “#CELEBRATEPRIDE” with a female airman saluting with rainbow colors on her hands.
