Runner Dies at Brooklyn Half Marathon

Spokesperson Frank Dwyer said the runner was taken to a hospital nearby where they later died. Other details, such as the reason for the runner's collapse, were not available until midday on Saturday.

Dwyer reported that six other runners were taken to the hospital. Three of them had life threatening injuries, whereas the other three suffered minor injuries.

Over 22,000 participants were scheduled to race between Prospect Park and the Coney Island boardwalk during the Saturday half marathon. The race returned fully-loaded for the first time in three years.

The temperature was over 80 degrees F (26.7 degrees Celsius) by the mid-day hour in Brooklyn. A heat advisory warning that high temperatures and humidity can lead to heat-related illnesses continues to be in effect across New York City until 8 p.m. Saturday.
