Senator Hirono Accuses GOP of Resorting to “Dog Whistles” in Probing Jackson’s Crime Record and Attacking Her for Being a Black Woman Defending the Poor

In Thursday's MSNBC broadcast The ReidOut, Senate Judiciary Committee member Senator Mazie Hirono (D.HI) accused Republicans on the Judiciary Committee of attacking Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson because she was “a black woman representing poor people” and said that these statements, in addition to criticisms of her track record on sex crimes, could be described as “dog whistles.”

Hirono claimed that Senator Josh Hawley (R.MO) has approved the appointments of judges with similar sentencing histories as Jackson's. “That's why I brought it up, and that's why I asked Judge Jackson, do you think that these judges who have been sentencing along the lines that you have, that they are soft on child pornographers? Of course, the answer is no. This is what you call a double standard. And they also attacked Judge Jackson for representing–a black woman representing poor people. You know, you could call these things dog whistles.”
