Taylor Hawkins, Drummer of Foo Fighters, Is Dead at 50

No information is yet available on the manner in which Foo Fighters’ drummer Taylor Hawkins passed away, but the band explained in a statement released on Friday that Hawkins's death was one of “tragic and untimely loss.”

Foo Fighters have been touring throughout South America. They played at an event in San Isidro, Argentina, on Sunday. They were also scheduled to perform at a different event festival in Bogota, Colombia, on Friday evening.

“His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever,” read a message on the band’s official Twitter account that was sent to journalists. “Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”

Following Foo Fighters’ founder and frontman Dave Grohl, Hawkins was perhaps the most prominent Foo Fighters band member, performing alongside Grohl in interviews as well as playing prominent parts in the band's video clips.

Grohl also appeared on Foo Fighters' recently released horror-comedy film Studio 666. In the film, a demon who lives in the house the band has rented takes over Grohl’s body and turns him into a murderer. Hawkins as well as others in the group–Pat Smear, Rami Jaffee, Chris Shiflett, Nate Mendel, and Nate Mendel, are killed in succession. The film gave the band, which for many years has been among the rock's most durable bands, some fun as they performed this ongoing joke. The idea for the film was born from the work they completed on their 10th album in an apartment in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley.

Hawkins played as the Foo Fighters’ drummer for the last 25 years of the band's existence. He took over the role from musician William Goldsmith in 1997.

Born Oliver Taylor Hawkins in Fort Worth Texas in 1972, Hawkins was raised in Laguna Beach, California. He performed in the small Southern California band Sylvia before getting his first big job as a drummer with Canadian musician Sass Jordan. Then he spent the latter half of the 1990s playing as the tour drummer for Alanis Morissette until Grohl invited him to sign on with his band, the Foo Fighters.

This is the second time Grohl has suffered the loss of a bandmate who was close to him. Grohl was the drummer of Nirvana when Kurt Cobain died in 1994.

Hawkins is survived by his wife, Alison, and their three children.
