Recent reports have suggested that Biden may be considering stopping the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) order referred to as Title 42, first in place by Trump, which gave federal immigration officials the power to swiftly return people who crossed the border back to their home countries.
A confidential ICE mail, reviewed by the Washington Post, advised top agency officials to be prepared for the possibility of a “mass migration event” if Biden removes Title 42. The email also recommended that officials work with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) which could aid in the rapid release of the tens of thousands of border crossings and illegal immigrants into the U.S. Interior.
The week before, Breitbart News exclusively revealed that Biden's DHS is looking at ending Title 42 on April 1 2022. A move like this, Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-TX) claims, would double the amount of illegal immigrants who cross the southern border.
Similarly, Axios reports that Biden's top officials are anticipating “a massive influx of more than 170,000” illegal immigrants in the event that Title 42 is ended. The current estimate by the government is that around 25,000 foreigners wait on the Mexican side of the border and will cross once Biden ends Title 42.
Sens. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Alex Padilla (D-CA) have been lobbying Biden to repeal Title 42, while Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ) have called on Biden to keep enforcing it.
“Given the impacts that changes to Title 42 could have on border communities, border security, and migrants, we urge your administration not to make any changes to Title 42 implementation until you are completely ready to execute and coordinate a comprehensive plan that ensures a secure, orderly, and humane process at the border,” they have written.
In the meantime, the Facebook-funded National Immigration Forum has been pushing Biden to repeal Title 42 for months. As well, the associates of former president George W. Bush have declared the policy “arbitrary and harmful” and have urged its removal.
In 2021, over two million border crossings and illegal immigrants crossed the Southern border. Experts predict that this year over 2.1 million people will cross the border.
In the meantime, many thousands of border crossings and illegal aliens are admitted in the U.S. Interior every few months. From January 2021 through August 2021, for instance, over half a million people were let in the U.S. interior.
In the month of January, over 62,500 border crossers as well as illegal immigrants had been allowed in the U.S. Interior — a foreign-born population that was more than double that of Princeton, New Jersey; more than twice the size of Lexington, Massachusetts; and more than six times that of Jackson, Wyoming.
